Volunteer Opportunities
Join the Fun, Join the Family — Volunteer!

The Jewel Box Theatre is an all-volunteer organization that requires many people to put on productions and to carry out the functions necessary to run the business. The Jewel Box Theatre’s July newsletter included an article by Marilyn Miller, president of the board of directors, explaining the various jobs — seen and unseen — that are performed by our volunteers (see the article online at www.jewelboxpoulsbo.org).

As volunteer coordinator for the Jewel Box Theatre, I have been fortunate to meet most of the people who have given their time and energy. They are wonderful, fun and interesting. In the last year and a half, more than 100 people have attended our orientation sessions. Most of those have chosen to work with us in some capacity. In addition, we have a number of expert performers and skilled technical folks who lend their talents on a regular basis.

And, for the first time, we have a cracker-jack volunteer coordination team. I would like to thank these people who have helped to lighten my workload and to enable the Jewel Box to serve its patrons better and more thoroughly. Leslie Crist trains and supervises a crew of five who take telephone messages and record and confirm show reservations. Judy Broeking is one of those phone answerers and recently has taken on the job of ticket production. During the run of each play, Judy also gives reminder calls every week to those who have volunteered to take tickets and serve refreshments at that weekend’s performances.

Margo Brown presents orientation sessions to prospective volunteers, acquainting them with the theater space and explaining the many tasks with which we still need help. And this summer, Jim and Carol Slade began helping with scheduling people to work the lobby for the run of each play. For each performance, it takes five people to run the front-of-house. Our typical run for the 2007/2008 season will be 12 performances, which means we need 60 volunteers to fill those positions over each 5-week run!

These are just a few of the many, many people who make our existence possible. My hat is off to them as part of our growing ‘family’ of volunteers who make the Jewel Box an exciting place to be. Call the theater at 360.779.9688 to let us know you’re interested. I will return your call and answer any questions.

Karen Archer
Volunteer Coordinator, Jewel Box Theatre

The Jewel Box Theatre needs a mailing coordinator.

Cass Quinn has been the backbone of the Jewel Box for many years, responsible for all the publicity materials mailings. She will step down at years end and we need a volunteer to take on her duties. Cass will train the new coordinator and be available to answer questions.

The Jewel Box sends out a postcard before each of its six plays, a notice of each of the six children’s shows, six newsletters per year and an annual season brochure. The mailings are usually prepared at one time, but mailed as appropriate to the theater’s production schedule.

The mailing coordinator will gather a group of volunteers to spend a morning or afternoon at the theater putting on the labels (and closure circles if needed). The process takes about eight to 10 hours for each mailing. The mailing coordinator also will maintain mailing lists and update them as needed.

Please call the Jewel Box at 360.779.9688 if you are interested in the mailing coordinator position.

The Jewel Box Theatre needs a set builders.

Can you handle a paintbrush or hammer? Possibly even a power drill? Have you got two hours available during an afternoon, evening or weekend? The Jewel Box needs your help building sets for our shows.

The night a show closes (Saturday) or possibly the next day (Sunday), the set is taken down and cleared out for the next show. Then, the process of repainting the floor and installing the set for the new show begins. The work varies with each production and becomes extremely intense two weeks before a show opens.

Please call the Jewel Box at 360.779.9688 if you are interested in building sets.
