Present Laughter
Written by Noel Coward

Directed by Erin Abbott

The plot depicts a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor, Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa.  Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis.  The character is a caricature of the author's real-life persona.

Noel Coward starred as Garry during the original run, which began with a long tour to accommodate wartime audiences- it was originally produced in 1942. He starred in the first British revival and later in the US and Paris. Subsequent productions have featured familiar actors:  Albert FinneyPeter O'TooleDonald SindenIan McKellen and Simon Callow, and in the US Clifton WebbDouglas Fairbanks Jr.George C. ScottFrank Langella and Kevin Kline.

Erin Abbott is directing for the first time.  She is very familiar to Jewel Box patrons as an actress in Marvelous Wonderettes.  She has also performed in several Musical Showcases and has been a Stage Manager.
