Radio On The Air is a program unique to the Jewel Box Theatre.

We re-create a 1940's radio studio and bring vintage programs, advertisements and music back to life. All of the sound effects are created live by our on-stage Foley artist.  The Program includes retro radio plays, vintage advertisements, old-time local news and classic songs from the Golden Age of Radio.

This fast-paced program has something for everyone. Radio On The Air feels like a trip back in time.

Radio on the Air turns our stage into a 1940’s radio studio.  Actors bring vintage radio plays to life with live sound effects and music.  The JBT audience becomes the radio studio audience and is part of the show. Radio On The Air was created by Ken Jones in the mid-2000’s.  It started as a “Second Stage Show” with minimal production and limited shows.  Our patrons enjoyed the nostalgia and ROTA’s popularity has grown.  Over the last few years, we have added ROTA to our Main Stage slate of shows.  The production values have elevated to include more music, movement and vintage programs.

We would like to dedicate this production to the memory of Al Gunby, JBT founder and long-time ROTA announcer.

Radio On The Air has a sister production, Radio On The Road, directed by Kathie Currie. Radio On The Road brings these classic radio plays to local retirement homes.

ROTA material is compiled from public domain sources.
