Come From Away is based on the events in the Newfoundland town of Gander during the week following the September 11 attacks, when 38 planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land unexpectedly at Gander International Airport. The characters in the musical are based on actual Gander residents and the stranded travelers they housed and fed.
The play received multiple awards including the Olivier and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical, a Tony for Best Direction, 4 Helen Hayes Awards, and 5 from The Outer Critics Circle. The musical has also been nominated for several other awards, reflecting its critical acclaim and popularity.

Sept 11, 2001 I was facilitating a corporate workshop in Atlanta, Georgia, when American airspace was closed. The next week was filled with fear, isolation, tears and the kindness of strangers as I tried to get home.
Nearly 3000 people killed in the 9/11 attacks never got to go home again. So, when Irene Sankoff and David Hein released Come From Away, a story about 7000 passengers stranded in Gander, Newfoundland and the community that took care of them - I campaigned every year to bring the show to Poulsbo.
It’s uplifting, it’s full of heart and it is so needed now. Bringing the premiere to the peninsula I can best describe the feeling with a show lyric “you are here at the start of a moment”.
